The new build Sports Hall has now been completed and handed over to delighted Client, Kent College. The project comprised the construction of a new Sports Hall with changing rooms, toilet and shower facilities, classrooms and office accommodation. Backing on to the existing Sports Hall, the new facility will create additional space to better accommodate the increasing school numbers which include both junior and senior school pupils. A sustainable development, the new building has achieved very high air test ratings and houses PV Solar Panels (with an energy rating reader) and sophisticated M&E installations monitored for energy efficiency with PITR lighting.

Senior Site Manager George Kyles successfully managed the project with the Baxall team and preferred sub-contractors. Overcoming a number of challenges along the way, George and the team had their work cut out during the early stages when excessive rain turned the site into a quagmire of mud.   Located on a steep sloping and space-restrictive clay site, an Access Plan for craneage and vehicle movements worked well to control all works activities; working outwards from the centre of the building footprint, the steel works were erected over three separate stages. A large self-erecting crane was deployed to carry out the roof and vertical cladding works.

Working within a busy live school environment, a number of measures were implemented to ensure the segregation of the works and staff access away from the school operations. A separate fence and gated entrance was constructed to the side of the school direct from the entrance road thus enabling all access and deliveries to proceed without disruption.

Customer service excellence and professionalism were maintained by George and the team throughout, culminating in a CCS Performance Beyond Compliance Award. Endeavours included the accommodation of the school exam and study periods (during which noisy works were rescheduled), ‘quiet periods’ during school assemblies, support to school studies and site visits for both staff and pupils.

Following the Baxall charity fundraising hike and bike challenge, the new Sports Hall hosted the formal cheque presentation by the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells to Baxall’s local preferred charity partner ellenor.   The College are extremely pleased with the finished works and duly christened the new Hall with netball lessons following formal handover.
