The History of Baxall
Baxall Construction was founded in 1964 by John and Audrey Exall, in Paddock Wood, Kent. Upon John’s retirement, the company was taken over by their two sons Nigel and Jonathan Exall, and their trusted friend and business partner Malcolm Clarke. Malcolm then became the Managing Director of Baxall, with Nigel as Contracts Director and Jonathan as Finance Director. After many years of the successful trio/partnership leading the way in construction, Nigel and Jonathan retired in 2020, leaving Malcolm at the helm, alongside Chris Tompsett and Steve Turner. In 2026 Malcolm took on the role as Chairman, handing over the reins to Stuart Hardie as Managing Director, alongside Chris Tompsett and Andrew Huggins.
Over the last 60+ years the company has grown from a small family-run business to a leading regional contractor across London and the South East. Baxall has always been a family-centred business, and we’re proud to keep this ethos at our core. We celebrate this through events like the Baxall Festival and Family Days, where our staff and their families come together to celebrate our shared success.
Malcolm Clarke has been the driving force behind Baxall becoming a ‘positive disruptor’ in the industry, challenging the norms and ensuring we are the best of the best. It’s now Stuart Hardie’s turn to lead Baxall into its next phase, to build upon the established extraordinary foundations. Baxall has an exceptional team, trusted clients and a clear strategic direction. Stuart’s focus will be on maintaining our impeccable standards, supporting our people and continuing to deliver outstanding outcomes for our clients and wider communities.
