Corporate Social Responsibility

As a responsible contractor we are constantly mindful of the impact our actions have on the communities in which we operate.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to the way in which businesses regulate their own ethics and effect upon the community. Strong CSR initiatives in turn help to maximise positive social impact.

At Baxall our ‘moral foundations’ run deep, and we deliver all projects in an ethically responsible way. On every contract we evaluate how we can strategically work hand in hand with our supply chain partners to add value socially, economically and environmentally throughout the duration of the scheme.

Supporting charities

We have a proud history of supporting charities and fundraising initiatives via Baxall bike rides, corporate golf days – even dressing up as Christmas elves!

Since 2020 we have raised well over £7,000 for ellenor hospice, £1,330 for Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance (KSSAA); £1,045 for the Nourish food bank in Tunbridge Wells and have delivered more than 680kg (and counting) this year to the Paddock Wood Community Storehouse food bank. By entering two Baxall teams in the Rye Harbour half-marathon Ekiden relay race we raised over £1,500 for Rye Harbour Discovery Centre, which we recently completed building for Sussex Wildlife Trust.

Social Value

Often used alongside the concept of CSR, the term ‘social value’ tends to refer to the value (often monetised) of a specific activity undertaken by a business.

Creating employment, training and apprenticeship opportunities is a cornerstone of our drive for social value. We actively support non-profit companies (such as TrAC) to provide employment opportunities to construction apprentices, and will support clients’ SLNT (Strategic Labour Needs and Training) requirements as well as monitor, evidence and report specific appointments and timelines as required.

Whilst on site at Southborough Community Hub near Tunbridge Wells, Kent, we offered to transform an outdated library and IT room at nearby Southborough CE Primary School into a dynamic learning space with a modern ICT suite for pupils.

Opened in July 2021, the school’s new Discovery Centre boasts over 4,000 new books, an amphitheatre and the latest tech – all worth in the region of £50,000. We provided the building and renovation work cost-free and our local supply chain partners contributed labour and materials free of charge.

Once again joining forces with our valued supply chain partners, the Baxall team delivering the Rye Harbour Discovery Centre proudly supported the RNLI Pebble Memorial project to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Mary Stanford lifeboat disaster, which claimed all 17 lives of the local Rye Harbour Lifeboat crew during a storm. By hosting workshops with a diversity of community groups (including Baxall staff), we helped create a nautical-themed memorial from hand decorated pebbles, in addition to assisting with the block formations, cementing and the setting of the pebbles ahead of the formal opening ceremony.

Environmental Social Governance (ESG)

Related to CSR, Environmental Social Governance (ESG) is how well a company adheres to the sustainability and CSR targets it sets itself.

At Baxall, we use bespoke Key Performance Indicator (KPI) software to analyse the social value benefits we add to each of our projects, according to set target themes and across all live and completed projects. By scrutinising our social value performance, we can tangibly prove we have achieved what we set out to deliver in terms of CSR and social value.

For example: For all our live projects, 50% of the total project spend is within 30 miles of the project’s location.

Baxall’s Rye Harbour Discovery Centre is a key example of how we use ESG to measure our environment performance.

We were engaged by Sussex Wildlife Trust to deliver Rye Harbour Discovery Centre, a low-impact, purpose-built visitor centre to support the nature reserve’s 360,000 annual visitors, with classrooms, meeting rooms, a café, shop and wheelchair-accessible toilet facilities.

A key conservation site, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is an ecologically sensitive area and a registered coastal SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), a European Protection Area and Ramsar site. Baxall’s Chartered Environmentalist Alan Leigh advised, guided and supported the project delivery team and worked closely and collaboratively with the Environment Agency to ensure best environmental and sustainable construction practice.

Project performance KPIs include:

  • 59% of site waste diverted from landfill
  • 100% of timber from sustainable source (12 miles from project location)
  • 82% of project spend within 30 miles of project location
  • CCS Gold National Site Award Winner for showcasing “an exceptional approach to considerate practice through fantastic external appearances and brilliant work with the local community. The commitments shown in respect to the environment, safety and the workforce were exemplary.”

“Giving back to the local community is a hugely important part of our company ethos.”
