Future Skills

Future Skills

At Baxall we are proud of our journey since our inception in 1964. As an ambitious and forward-thinking ‘SME disrupter’ we have grown steadily in recent years, recruiting key personnel to strengthen our already well-established senior team.

  • To date, over 70% of our technical staff are professionally qualified. Of these, 23 employees are members of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB); seven are currently undertaking the CIOB workshop and three have embarked upon the Chartered Membership Club.
  • By 2022 we are projected to have 33 staff members with CIOB status.
  • Ongoing staff development and training is a contributing factor to our low churn rate and results in internal promotions, with 43% of Baxall staff achieving promotion within the last seven years.
  • Our staff remain our greatest asset and as part of Baxall’s commitment to Continuing Professional Development we continually support all our employees – both site- and office-based – to achieve (and surpass) their career potentials.

Opening up opportunities

With the UK construction sector grappling with a skills shortage, at Baxall we understand the need to recruit, mentor and develop the next generation of construction professionals.

Baxall Academy

Baxall Academy is our dynamic, company-wide scheme dedicated to hiring and training both new and existing Baxall staff in their chosen construction career paths, and equipping them with the skillset they need for a successful future within the industry.

The Academy has enjoyed notable successes since its inception over the last four years; in 2019, four Baxall Academy Trainees won the CIOB Student Challenge. In summer 2021 Graduate Site Manager Barbara Holding and Commercial Graduate Francesca Spry completed their training after having been mentored over the previous 12 months and undertaking work experience across different sectors within the company.

Another Baxall Academy trainee, Brennan Drummond, is currently in his final year studying Construction Management at the University of Kent. We took Brennan on after his positive experience with us working under a shared apprenticeship scheme and he is already making his mark.

We are currently recruiting for our new intake of graduates/trainees and apprentices for 2022. Contact us for more information.

The 5% Club

Baxall take the responsibility of training the next generation of construction employees seriously. As a committed member of The 5% Club we have pledged to take on a new recruit each year and encourage our supply chain to proactively sign up to engage with new trainees.

Kent Construction Guild Group

Baxall are members of Kent Construction Guild Group, a valuable forum for delivering best practice for work experience engagement and enhancing the relationship between employers and education. It also enables us (COVID restrictions-permitting) to engage with local schools, colleges and careers events and take on individuals for work experience.

CIOB synergy

We work closely with our local CIOB hub (Baxall Director Steve Turner (FCIOB) is a committee member of the CIOB’s Maidstone hub in Kent) and support them in engaging with local school and colleges via our Training Partnership. During conferences, we highlight how the CIOB can help businesses take on apprentices and provide training solutions.

In-House Trades

We have our own small, successful team of painters and decorators and regularly take on apprentices within this section of Baxall’s works. Our apprentice painter and decorator Nikki O’Grady has excelled in her role within Baxall and recently scooped MidKent College’s ‘Best Student 2020’ award.

All our in-house trades are highly conscientious and work exceptionally to achieve the highest standard of finish.
